Roller Derby-ing

Roller Derby.
That was what my classmate told me to join them to watch.

Huh?
Was the only thing that went by my head

So what one earth is Roller Derby?

Basically, it’s just a game where girls in skates go around a ring knocking each other and score points for over taking. It has loads of rock and punk influence (I think) and the players are dressed real cute with tattoos and all that.

The venue was the showground and it being my first time there on public transport and alone, I was being a little retarded trying to find the correct entrance. Thank god for maps.

We went in, my friend saw her friend and we got a mat to sit on.
We waited a bit, watched the band playing,

watched the skaters roll around and a goofy referee performing his ballet moves to amuse kids.

Then in about an hour, they had a check of the safety equipment…

and the game started.

I was confused at first but my friend explained everything to me while the game went on.
So, there are two teams. One is the Mile Die Club (red and black) another is the Road Train Rollers (Blue). Each of the players have cute names like Minx of the ring and so on.

They start with a few (I can’t remember the exact number) on each side and form a pack. One from each team is called a Jammer and has a star on her helmet.

The pack moves first with the two Jammers chasing behind.

The aim is for the Jammers to chase up to the pack, go through it, and over take them.

This complete round is called a Jam and the first one to go through the pack is called the Lead Jammer. After this first jam, she’ll go round the ring to chase after the pack to do it again. Now after this second Jam, she’ll have the power to call off the Jam. This means that she can cancel the Jam anytime but it’s usually when she spots the other team about to score a point and to prevent them from doing so.

Here’s a video to make everything clearer. Click the link because I don’t know how to embed videos from photobucket. Heh.

From the video, you can see the lead Jammer doing some hand signals. That’s how she calls of the Jam.

Crazy, senseless FUN.
We Like.

=D

It was the first time any of my classmates asked me out since I’ve been here.

It was also the first time I watched Roller Derby.

It was the first Saturday night I took a bus out and back alone.

It was the first time I made a friend with someone from Turkistan (on the bus).

It was also full of fun.

Now I’m just wondering why I feel neither stressed nor busy when I think I should be.

Hmm..

Oh, and just for Day.

Cute huh?
